One of the most common questions I hear in Lake Country is: 'Is it worth fixing, or should I just buy a new computer?' There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but there are clear guidelines that make the decision easy.
Fix it if:
- The repair cost is less than half the price of a replacement
- The computer is less than 5 years old
- The problem is a single component — a broken screen, dead battery, or failed hard drive
- You have important data or software set up the way you like it
- The computer otherwise runs well
Replace it if:
- Multiple things are failing at the same time
- The computer is 7 or more years old and noticeably slow
- Repair costs would exceed the value of the machine
- It cannot run the software you need
- It is running Windows 10 and cannot upgrade to Windows 11 (support ends October 2025)
The $40 diagnostic
I charge a flat $40 diagnostic on every computer brought to me in Lake Country, and it comes straight off your bill when you go ahead with the repair. I look at the problem, tell you honestly what is wrong, give you a quote, and let you decide. No pressure, no hidden fees. If the repair is not worth it, I will tell you — and I can help you choose and set up a new machine too.
