How to Speed Up a Slow Computer (Without Buying a New One)

A slow computer does not always mean it is time for a replacement. Here are the most effective ways to make your computer fast again.

Computers slow down over time — that is normal. But in most cases, a slow computer can be made fast again without spending a lot of money. Here are the things I check first when someone brings me a sluggish machine in Lake Country, BC.

1. Replace the hard drive with an SSD

If your computer is more than 4 years old and still has a traditional spinning hard drive, this is almost always the single biggest improvement you can make. Replacing it with a solid-state drive (SSD) can make a computer feel brand new — it boots faster, opens programs faster, and responds more quickly to everything you do. It is the upgrade I recommend most often.

2. Add more RAM

If your computer slows down when you have multiple tabs open or multiple programs running, it may not have enough memory (RAM). Adding more RAM is usually affordable and makes a noticeable difference for multitasking.

3. Remove malware and junk software

Viruses, adware, and bloatware consume your computer's resources constantly, even when you are not actively using those programs. A full malware scan and cleanup often dramatically improves performance.

4. Clean up startup programs

Many programs set themselves to launch automatically when Windows starts. Over time, this list grows and your startup time suffers. Disabling unnecessary startup programs is quick and free.

5. Reinstall Windows

Sometimes the best fix is a fresh start. A clean Windows installation removes years of accumulated junk and restores the computer to its original speed. I back up your data first, of course.

If your computer is running slow, bring it in to my Lake Country location. The $40 diagnostic — credited to your repair — tells you exactly what is causing the slowdown and what it would cost to fix it.
