Is there actually a computer repair shop in Lake Country?

Yes, and that is genuinely newer than most people realise. For a long time the answer to a broken computer in Lake Country was a drive to Kelowna and a queue at a service counter, which is a strange state of affairs for a town of this size.

I live and work here, so when something breaks you are not phoning a help line in another province, you are phoning a neighbour. Drop-off is by appointment at my bench rather than a shop counter, which means your machine goes straight to work instead of sitting behind a queue, and it means I am actually there when you arrive.

Oyama, Winfield, Carr’s Landing and Okanagan Centre are all minutes away. Lake Country covers a lot of ground for its population. Carr’s Landing to Oyama is the better part of a twenty minute drive, with no repair counter anywhere in between. That gap is the reason this shop exists.

Do you come to homes in Lake Country?

Yes, and this is the one part of my service area where in-home visits are genuinely straightforward, because I am already here. That covers Oyama, Winfield, Carr’s Landing and Okanagan Centre.

In-home makes the most sense for the jobs that are really about your setup rather than the machine: a new computer that needs settling in where it will actually live, wifi that is fine in one room and useless in another, a printer that has never worked properly, or showing someone how to do something on their own equipment rather than on mine.

Some jobs still need the bench, and I will tell you honestly which is which when you call. Anything involving opening a laptop, recovering a drive, or a repair that needs testing over several hours is faster and cheaper as a drop-off. There is no point paying for my travel time twice when the machine has to come to the bench anyway.

Where exactly do I drop my computer off?

Booking a time is not a formality. It means I am there when you arrive, the bench is clear, and your machine goes onto it immediately rather than joining a pile. It is also why I can commit to phoning you the same day with a real diagnosis. The queue is managed by the calendar rather than by however many people happened to walk in.

Bring the charger if it is a laptop. If the machine will not turn on at all, the charger is frequently part of the answer, and testing with a known-good one is the first thing I do.

How much does computer repair cost in Lake Country?

It starts with a flat $40 diagnostic, credited to your bill when you go ahead with the work. Labour after that is $60 an hour, and most repairs land between $60 and $150 all in.

The common jobs have flat starting prices rather than an open meter: virus and malware removal from $69, a speed and cleanup tune-up from $59, a Windows reinstall from $89, an SSD or memory upgrade from $49 plus the part, a laptop screen replacement from $99 plus the panel, and data recovery typically $120 all in.

You hear the whole number before anything is touched, and it does not move afterwards. If I open a machine and find a second, unrelated problem, I stop and phone you rather than adding it to the invoice.

Do I have to drive to Kelowna for anything?

Almost never. Laptop, desktop and Mac repair, virus removal, data recovery, upgrades, Windows reinstalls and custom builds all happen here in Lake Country.

The one genuine exception is a physically destroyed drive that needs a clean-room lab, which no bench anywhere can do. I refer those to a specialist at no markup, and I tell you that straight away rather than charging you for a long shot.

The other thing worth knowing is that you do not need to drive anywhere to find out whether something is worth doing. Phone me and describe what the machine is doing. If it is a five-minute thing, I will tell you and you will not be charged for it.

What sort of work comes out of Lake Country?

A fair spread, and it skews differently from the city. A lot of family desktops and laptops that have been going for years and have simply slowed down, where the honest fix is a $49 drive upgrade rather than a new computer. A steady stream of virus and pop-up cleanups. Machines that will not boot, usually with the family photos still on them and no backup.

There is also more home-office work here than people expect, and more seasonal property owners who need something sorted in a narrow window while they are in town. If you are working to a deadline like that, say so when you book and I will tell you honestly whether it fits.

Why use a local person rather than a chain?

Because my reputation lives here. I am not a counter in a store that will still be there whatever happens with your machine. I am someone you will run into at the grocery store, whose name is on the business, and who has to be able to look you in the eye afterwards.

Practically, that shows up in the things that cost me money in the moment. I will tell you when a repair is not worth doing. I will tell you when it is a five-minute fix I am not going to charge for. Neither of those makes sense for a business with a sales floor and a quota behind it, and both of them are why people come back and send their neighbours.
