After nearly 20 years of fixing computers, I can tell you that the vast majority of virus infections and scams are preventable. You do not need to be a tech expert — you just need a few good habits and the right tools.

The essential basics

  • Keep Windows updated — Microsoft releases security patches regularly and they matter
  • Keep your browser updated — Chrome, Edge, and Firefox update automatically if you let them
  • Use Windows Defender (built into Windows 10 and 11) — it is genuinely good and free
  • Use strong, unique passwords — a password manager like Bitwarden makes this easy
  • Enable two-factor authentication on your email account

The scams to watch for

Phone scams and fake pop-ups are the number one way I see people get into trouble. Here is what to know:

  • Microsoft, Apple, and Google will NEVER call you to say your computer has a virus
  • Pop-ups saying your computer is infected and to call a phone number are fake — close the browser tab
  • Unexpected emails with attachments or urgent links should be treated with extreme suspicion
  • If someone calls claiming to be from your bank, hang up and call the number on the back of your card

Backups: your last line of defence

Even with perfect security habits, things can go wrong. A regular backup means you can recover quickly from ransomware, hardware failure, or accidental deletion. Plug in an external drive once a week and run a backup. I can set this up for you if you are not sure how.

If you have questions about keeping your computer safe, or if you think something is already wrong, give me a call or drop by in Lake Country. Honest advice, upfront pricing.
