Laptops give warning signs before they completely fail. Catching these early usually means a cheaper, easier repair. Here are the seven signs I see most often when people bring laptops to me for repair in Lake Country, BC.
1. The battery drains unusually fast
Laptop batteries last roughly 2–4 years with normal use. If your battery is dying after an hour (or less) when it used to last all day, the battery needs replacing. It is a straightforward, affordable repair.
2. The laptop runs hot and the fan is loud
Overheating is a common cause of premature hardware failure. Usually this means the cooling vents are clogged with dust, or the thermal paste on the processor has dried out. A cleaning and re-paste fixes this and extends the life of the machine significantly.
3. The screen has lines, dark spots, or flickers
Screen issues can be caused by a damaged display, a loose cable, or a failing graphics component. Many screen problems are fixable without replacing the whole laptop — bring it in and I can tell you exactly what is needed.
4. It runs noticeably slower than it used to
Gradual slowdowns are normal, but sudden or dramatic slowdowns can indicate a failing hard drive, malware, or a software problem. Do not wait — a failing drive can cause data loss.
5. It shuts down randomly or crashes
Random shutdowns are usually caused by overheating, a failing battery, or a hardware issue. This is a sign to get it looked at soon, before the problem gets worse.
6. Keys are sticking, missing, or unresponsive
Keyboard damage from spills or wear is very repairable. Individual keys, entire keyboards, and even liquid damage can often be fixed affordably.
7. It will not connect to Wi-Fi reliably
Intermittent Wi-Fi issues can be a driver problem, a software issue, or a failing wireless card. All three are fixable.
If you are seeing any of these signs, bring your laptop in to my Lake Country, BC location. The $40 diagnostic is credited to your repair, and the sooner a problem is caught, the easier and less expensive it is to fix.
