6 Things That Will Keep Your Computer Running Longer

A little maintenance goes a long way. Here are the habits and upgrades that help computers in Lake Country, BC last far beyond the average lifespan.

People often replace computers they did not need to replace. With a bit of care and the occasional affordable upgrade, most computers can keep running well for 7 to 10 years. Here is what I recommend.

1. Keep the vents clean

Dust buildup inside a laptop or desktop is one of the leading causes of overheating and premature hardware failure. Every 1–2 years, have the vents blown out and the cooling system cleaned. I do this as part of most service visits.

2. Use it on a hard surface

Using a laptop on a bed or pillow blocks the air vents and causes it to overheat constantly. A desk, table, or laptop stand keeps the airflow clear and the temperature down.

3. Do not ignore software updates

Windows updates, browser updates, and driver updates often contain important security fixes and performance improvements. Ignoring them leaves your computer vulnerable and can cause problems over time.

4. Upgrade to an SSD if you have not already

If your computer still has a traditional hard drive, replacing it with an SSD is the single best thing you can do. SSDs are faster, more reliable, and generate less heat. They dramatically extend the useful life of older machines.

5. Restart regularly

Leaving your computer running for weeks without a restart lets memory leaks and background processes accumulate. A regular restart clears this out and keeps things running smoothly.

6. Have it serviced before something breaks

A checkup every couple of years catches small problems before they become expensive ones. Bring it in to my Lake Country location — the $40 diagnostic is credited to any work, and I will let you know if there is anything worth addressing.
