Losing years of family photos, important work documents, or financial records is one of the most stressful things that can happen with a computer. The good news is that data is often recoverable — even from drives that seem completely dead.
Common causes of data loss I see in Lake Country
- Hard drive failure (clicking, grinding, or simply not detected)
- Accidental deletion of files or folders
- Ransomware or virus attack encrypting your files
- Windows corruption or a failed Windows update
- Laptop dropped or water damaged
- Partition errors or formatted drives
What to do (and not do) if you lose data
Stop using the drive immediately. The more you use a failing drive, the less likely data recovery becomes. Do not try to reinstall Windows, run disk repair tools, or let someone inexperienced poke around the drive. Bring it to me as soon as possible.
What data recovery looks like
For most software-level issues — accidental deletion, corrupted partitions, failed Windows — I can recover files directly using professional recovery software. For mechanical hard drive failures (clicking or grinding sounds), specialized hardware tools are required. I will always give you an honest assessment of the likelihood of recovery before we proceed.
Prevention: the only foolproof solution
The only true protection from data loss is a backup. I recommend keeping an external hard drive for backups and, ideally, a cloud backup as well. If you are not sure how to set this up, I can show you during any service visit.
